"In one moment in time, our service members will be feeding and clothing displaced refugees - providing humanitarian assistance. In the next moment, they will be holding two warring tribes apart - conducting peacekeeping operations. Finally, they will be fighting a highly lethal mid-intensity battle. All on the same day, all within three city blocks. It will be what we call the three block war." - General Charles Krulak, USMC "It may not be war, but it sure as hell ain't peace" - Major General Steven Arnold, USA - on Somalia Iraqi Freedom AAR / Observations Joint Urban Warrior (PDF) A Century of Small Wars Shows They Can Be Won by Max Boot (New York Times) USMC Small Wars Center of Excellence USMC Small Wars Manual (PDF) Welcome to the Urban Operations Journal. This site is designed as an online aid and web portal for members of United States, allied and coalition military services researching urban military operations. The intended audience also includes civilian members of the U.S. Department of Defense and defense contractors who are attempting to find solutions to the problems inherent to this most difficult operating environment. The Urban Operations Journal contains original material submitted by site visitors as well as urban operations related studies, papers and articles that, if not posted here, would be 'gathering dust' on the shelves of our military and civilian institutions. The site also links to urban operations, 'small wars', and cultural intelligence related news and issues. We try to blend the past and lessons (learned or unlearned) with the current world situation. Urban operations are much more than kicking in doors and the 'last three-hundred yards' of an urban battle. We must insure we do not win hard fought urban ground only to lose the war in the consolidation and transition phases of military operations. The successful conduct of urban operations is difficult at best and we can ill afford to relearn lessons already learned or to ignore the problem - we cannot wish it away in anticipation of the next Desert Storm or facing an enemy that utilizes Iraqi style doctrine, TTP, and military strategy ineptitude as seen in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Urban Operations Journal is a private site and as such, does not reflect the official policy or opinions of the U.S. Government, Department of Defense or the Services. Some of the documents posted here or linked to the Urban Operations Journal are PDF files. To view, navigate, and print PDF sites download Adobe Acrobat Reader. |
