The genesis of this site is the MOUT Homepage (MHP) Internet site that went online in February 1998. The MHP was created as a result of numerous requests to the site's originator, Dave Dilegge, for open-source information on urban military operations. At the time, Dilegge was an Urban Operations Analyst for the U.S. Marine Corps. After numerous sessions of spelling out Internet addresses on the phone, e-mailing the same, and faxing hard copy documents to those that required urban operations information, he decided to post a page that would serve as a "one-stop" resource on the subject. The MHP became quite popular and in February 2002 a decision was made to move it to its new home here at the Urban Operations Journal. Again, welcome to the Urban Operations Journal. This site is designed as an online aid and web portal for members of United States, allied and coalition military services researching urban military operations. The intended audience also includes civilian members of the U.S. Department of Defense and defense contractors who are attempting to find solutions to the problems inherent to this most difficult operating environment. The Urban Operations Journal contains original material submitted by site visitors as well as urban operations related studies, papers and articles that, if not posted here, would be 'gathering dust' on the shelves of our military and civilian institutions. The site also links to urban operations, 'small wars', and cultural intelligence related news and issues. We try to blend the past and lessons learned with the current world situation. Urban operations are much more than kicking in doors and the 'last three-hundred yards' of an urban battle. We must insure we do not win hard fought urban ground only to lose the war in the consolidation and transition phases of military operations. The Urban Operations Journal is a private site and as such does not reflect the official policy or opinions of the U.S. Government, Department of Defense or the Services. Comments, questions and contributions are encouraged and always welcomed. We also encourage you to sign on as a member of the Discussion Board - this is a place to interact with others tackling the problems we face in conducting successful urban operations. |
